Listed in the Domesday Book in 1086, the Civil Parish of Great Hallingbury now comprises seven hamlets located along the Roman road of Stane Street or around the perimeter of the former Hallingbury Place Estate, adjacent to Hatfield Forest.   In addition to Great Hallingbury village, these include Anvil Cross, Bedlars Green, Howe Green, Thremhall, Tilekiln Green and Woodside Green.
